About PlayLook

Built by a coach who needed a better way to teach

PlayLook started with a frustration every youth coach knows. Patrick Thornton coaches youth football, and the tools he found could only help him do part of the job — put together plays, build a playbook, print game sheets. None of them helped him do what actually happens on the field: teach players the ins and outs of their positions and the plays we run.

So he built what he needed — a platform that brings a playbook to life and turns coaches into teachers. PlayLook is designed to help teach players the game, from first-time players learning what a slant is to players who have been playing for years and need an extra edge. And it's built to excel at coaching both flag and tackle football.

PlayLook also works between practices. Players can open the app at home — reviewing the plays their coach sent, watching animations, and studying their position — so they learn on their own time and show up to practice and game day already prepared.

Patrick Thornton

Founder, PlayLook · Youth football coach

Patrick has years of experience as a software executive focused on education software and serious gaming — building tools whose whole job is to help people learn. He's also a professor at the University of Maryland, specializing in user-centered design and software development.

PlayLook sits at the intersection of those worlds: a coaching platform designed the way teaching actually works, by someone who coaches every week and studies how people learn for a living.
